‘Fire: Incendiary Exhibition’ (2019)
‘Incendiary’
Group exhibition
Lansdown Gallery, Stoud
February 2019
Curator Patricia Brien’s callout for this exhibition correlated with the opening of a new waste incinerator facility in Stroud, Uk. The use of incinerators as a means of waste management is a critically debated topic due to a range of reasons not only in regard to their impact on human and non-human eco-systems. I responded to this callout by considering the process cycles that material transformations undergo and I particularly questioned the role of fire in this context and the importance and value of materials that are part of artworks and natural artefacts. I made drawings of household rubbish, and then set fire to the paper scrolls that showed the drawings. For the exhibition display I showed photographs of their burning process and the charred artefacts.
