Paper Scrolls (2019/2020)
Since 2016 I had been exploring how long scrolls of lining paper might be used as the basis of different drawing supports. The long pieces of paper could be rolled up as scrolls, used indoors and outdoors. For some of the scrolls I experimented with, I folded the paper layer double, just for the width of several centimetres, and I used machine sewing to fix the double layers. This produced narrow tunnels into which sticks of wood could be inserted. The addition of the sticks allowed a more convenient rolling up of the paper and fixing the roll with strings, but also facilitated options for hanging and displaying of the scrolls such that wavy arrangements of paper lengths would be visible.
I used paper scrolls to respond to the callouts for the following group exhibitions, and I also used these methods for drawing supports in my contribution to ‘Incendiary’, a group exhibition which I document here in a separate section on this website (see ‘Fire’….).
